There was an article in Finnish HS NYT-liite on 30th of October about what has happened to yoga? Yoga is branded to all areas – there are sauna yoga, aerial yoga, naked yoga, yoga for mothers and children, yoga for men etc. I think it is wonderful that these days in western world it is easy to find yoga for everyone. It wasn’t like that few years ago and when I was working in corporate world in Finland, I didn’t even tell anyone I was practicing yoga or Qiqong, because I thought I was “weird”.
In the article, there was a long list about branded yoga but not a word about Corporate or Office yoga. It tells that here yoga and corporates have been and still are quite separate worlds. Now when yoga is so common and it is obvious that everybody can do that, it’s good time to bring ideas how to combine more corporate world, business and yoga. I think it can be great combination.
Yoga is not just about being able to perform complicated poses and movements. It is a holistic approach to physical and mental health as well as a person’s well-being and personal growth. Bringing yoga to workplace is the extended concept of working peacefully in the middle of hectic corporate and business environment.
What’s the benefit?
Long hours, multi-tasking, competition, demanding time-schedules, probably irregular eating habits, busy life outside of work, families, all combine to create a pool of stressed workforce. Yoga is a form of excercise known to increase flexibility, strength, concentration and breath capacity while also reducing stress. It is about helping employees to find calmness, that very own moment at least once a day. It is about the possibility for the employees to get to know more about themselves – that’s one thing we all are interested about – who we really are. The skill to calm the mind and knowing the own potential can enhance clarity and creative thinking and increase effectiveness in addition to good energy at the workplace.
Yoga programme can be implemented easily and with low cost. The only thing required is a place to have a session and it can be anywhere such as conference room to be filled with bunch of willing participants with a strong desire for a healthier life. In general the session can be tailored to address the needs of people with completely different fitness levels and be given with different modifications suitable for all participants. Yoga does not have to be “your thing” but it is great tool to find new things about you.
